We were visiting friends in Andalusia when we stumbled on the splendid idea to visit the Alhambra in Granada (1). However, at that moment, we didn't know about the sales procedures to buy tickets to see the place.

The Alhambra is declared part of our World Heritage (2), and especially for the Nasrid Palaces a strict limitation on the number of visitors at any moment is enforced. To be sure to be able to enter, you have to book long in advance, especially during vacations and holidays. Everything is done through the internet, and paid by credit card, or you have to go to a specific bank in Spain and follow the procedure there.

Anyway, one way or another, we started out from Malaga a few days later, by an early morning bus, with 2 e-tickets for the Alhambra. The trip takes a few hours, and from the bus terminal in Granada we needed two more buses to get up to the Alhambra. All this on Easter weekend. The traffic was all in a mess, not only because of road works, but also in preparation for the big procession (ladies with black mantillas and long dresses...).

We walked up the last few hundred meters, encountering ever more tourists on the way, and a real flood of people at the entrance, waiting in line at the box offices to pick up their tickets.

With our internet reservation, we didn't have to queue. But when we presented our papers... we got a little unpleasant surprise. While we were trying to find a date for which tickets were still available, we must have skipped to the next month, which meant that we arrived there one month in advance...

Fortunately, the lady at the box, as well as her superior, were kind enough to let us have the tickets of another couple that didn't show up on time. Only, we would have to wait till the last group to enter into the main attraction, the Nazari Palaces.

So our visit to the Alhambra began in a very exciting climate... More to follow.

The first place to see is the Generalife which is the 'leisure side' of the Alhambra. Beautiful gardens, fountains, and views. The palaces are less sumptuous, but there are some very pretty corners.

We walked around all the gardens and patios and planned to cross over to the main part when... the rain started. The rain poured and poured, and there was nowhere to hide from it. Even the walkways were full of water.

Soaked tourists where running around and looking for shelter. Finally, the only dry place we found was the souvenir shop. We had no rain coat nor spare clothes, and we were wet and freezing. There was a small heater in the shop and we stood close to it while choosing a sweatshirt with the inevitable (and beautiful) Alhambra logo on it.

After some time the rain diminished and we dared to go out again and continue our visit. We could only enter the Palace with the last tour (around 4:30 pm), so we had to wait outside and try to keep warm.

After our compulsory consumer moment, we headed for the Palace of Charles V, which was also full of people who had been hiding from the rain. After a look around, we went to the Alcazaba and saw all that was to be seen there, including the beautiful panorama of the city. We still had time to spare and were feeling tired and cold and hungry...

Therefore we entered a small museum at the side of the Charles V palace, where we took a quick snack, made some pictures, looked at the maquettes and other exhibits, and waited for the time of our visit of the Nasrid Palace.

Even if our time hadn't come yet, we tried and succeeded in entering the Palace. This gave us more leisure to look at the marvels of this unforgettable place.

Each single wall or pillar is a wonder and a piece of art. Roofs and floors give the sensation of being in a totally new universe. There is a richness of colours and shapes, and a constant contrast between light and darkness, between shallow and deep, round forms and long ones. All of this blends together into a lovely and wonderful masterpiece. Everything shows a deep sense of beauty and delicacy.

In order to prevent idolatry, Islam doesn't allow depicting persons and forms of nature, so all elements used in the compositions are geometrical or calligraphic. The exception is the fountain with the 12 lions and the newer work also shows plant motives. This points to the influence of christian culture or to a freer interpretation of Islam.

There are so many beautiful details that you never tire from looking at them. Surely few places on earth contain so much of the beauty human hands can create. When our time was up, we felt that our universe was broadened and we left this palace with new treasures that will remain with us.

Estávamos visitando amigos em Andaluzia, quando tivemos a genial idéia de visitar a Alhambra, em Granada (1). No entanto, naquele momento ainda não sabíamos a respeito do como se faz para comprar os ingressos.

A Alhambra faz parte do Patrimonio Cultural Mundial (2) e, em particular para o Palácio dos Nasarides, existe um numero limitado de visitantes. Para ter certeza de poder entrar, é preciso reservar com muito tempo de antecedência, sobretudo durante as férias e os feriados. Tudo é feito pela internet e pago com cartão de crédito, ou voce precisa ir a um banco específico, na Espanha e comprar lá.

De todas as maneiras, de uma
forma ou de outra, partimos de  Málaga, alguns dias mais tarde, num ônibus que sai cedo, com nossos dois ingressos para a Alhambra. A viagem leva poucas horas e da rodoviária em Granada tivemos que tomar mais dois ônibus, para chegar lá em cima. Isso tudo aconteceu durante o feriado da Páscoa. O tráfego estava uma loucura, não só por causa das obras nas ruas, mas também devido as preparações para a grande procissão (as senhoras com mantilhas e vestidos longos pretos).

Os últimos metros são feitos à pé, e durante a caminhada encontrávamos mais turistas e uma verdadeira avalanche de gente se encontrava na entrada, esperando na fila da bilheteria para comprar os ingressos.

Com nossa reserva feita pela internet, não precisamos esperar. No entanto, quando entregamos nossos papéis, tivemos uma pequena e desagradável surpresa... Enquanto tentávamos conseguir uma data para a qual ainda houvessem tickets disponíveis, devemos ter saltado um mes, o que significa que chegamos lá um mes mais cedo...

Felizmente, a senhora da bilheteria, bem como seu chefe, eram muito gentis e nos passaram os tickets de um casal que não tinha podido chegar a tempo. Só que teríamos que esperar até o último grupo, para podermos ter acesso à atração principal: o Palácio dos Nazarides.

Assim, nossa visita a Alhambra comecou num clima muito excitante! Ainda tem mais...

O primeiro lugar para se visitar é o Generalife, que é a 'área de lazer' da Alhambra. Lindos jardins, fontes e vistas. Os palácios não são tão suntuosos, mas tem lugares e cantinhos muito bonitos.

Passeamos pelos jardins e páteos, e tínhamos a intenção de atravessar para a parte principal, quando... a chuva começou! Chovia e chovia, e não havia nenhum refúgio onde pudéssemos nos proteger. Até os caminhos estavam inundados.

 Turistas ensopados corriam daqui prá lá, procurando um cantinho para ficarem. No final, o único lugar sêco que encontramos foi a lojinha de souvenirs. Não tinhamos capa de chuva nem roupa extra, e estávamos completamente molhados e mortos de frio! Na loja havia um pequeno aquecedor, e ficamos parados pertinho dele, enquanto escolhíamos um agasalho com o inevitável (e bonito) logotipo da Alhambra.

Após algum tempo, a chuva diminuiu e tivemos a coragem de sair dali e continuar nossa visita. Só poderíamos entrar no Palácio com o último grupo (por volta das 16:30hs), de forma que tínhamos que esperar do lado de fora e tentar nos mantermos aquecidos e secos.

Passado nosso momento de consumo compulsório, nos dirigimos ao Palacio de Carlos V, que também estava lotado de gente tentando se proteger da chuva. Demos uma olhada e fomos para a Alcazaba, onde vimos o que havia para se ver, incluindo o lindo panorama da cidade. Ainda tínhamos que esperar algum tempo e nos sentíamos cansados, com frio e com fome...

Então, entramos num pequeno museu, ao lado do Palácio de Charles V, onde fizemos um lanchinho, algumas fotos, olhamos as maquetes e outras peças, e ficamos aguardando a hora de nossa visita ao Palácio Nazaride.

Apesar de que nosso horário ainda não tivesse chegado, tentamos e conseguimos entrar mais cedo no Palácio, o que nos deu mais tempo livre para admirar as maravilhas daquele lugar inesquecível.

Cada parede ou pilar é, em si, uma obra de arte. Tetos e chãos nos dão a impressão de estar num universo completamente novo. Há uma riqueza indiscrítivel de cores e formas e um constante contraste entre claro-escuro, superficie-profundidade, formas redondas-alongadas. Tudo se funde numa linda e adorável obra de arte. Tudo mostra um sentido profundo de beleza e delicadeza.

A fim de evitar a idolatria, o Islamismo não permite a figuração de pessoas e formas naturais, então todos os elementos usados nas composições são geométricos ou caligráficos. A exceção é a fonte com os 12 leões e também nas novas decorações existem motivos com plantas. Isto denota a influência da cultura cristã ou à uma interpretação mais livre sobre o Islamismo.

Há tantos detalhes lindos que a gente nunca se cansa de olhar! Com certeza, poucos lugares na terra contém tanto da beleza que as mãos humanas podem criar. Quando nosso tempo terminou, sentimos que nossos universos se alargaram e saímos daquele Palácio enriquecidos com novos tesouros que permanecerão em nós.

We waren op bezoek bij vrienden in Andaloesië toen we op het schitterende idee kwamen het Alhambra in Granada te gaan bekijken (1). We wisten toen nog niets van de regels die gelden om aan tickets te geraken.

Het Alhambra is uitgeroepen tot wereldcultureel erfgoed (2) en vooral voor het Paleis van de Nazariden zijn strikte bezoekersaantallen vastgelegd. Om er zeker van te zijn binnen te geraken, moet je vooral tijdens vakanties en feestdagen lang vooraf boeken. Dat gebeurt allemaal via het internet, met betaling per kredietkaart, of anders bij een bepaalde bankinstelling in Spanje waar je dezelfde procedure doorloopt.

Hoe dan ook zaten we een paar dagen later op de vroege autobus uit Malaga met twee e-tickets voor het Alhambra op zak. De reis duurt een paar uur en van de busterminal in Granada moesten we nog twee keer een bus nemen om boven bij het Alhambra te geraken. En dat allemaal in het paasweekend. Het verkeer zat in een knoop, niet alleen door wegenwerken, maar ook vanwege de voorbereiding op de grote processie (dames met zwarte mantilla's en lange klederen...)

We klommen de laatste honderden meters naar boven en kwamen steeds meer toeristen tegen, met tenslotte een ware vloed van wachtenden aan de loketten om hun tickets op te halen.

Met onze internetreservatie hoefden we niet in de rij te staan. Maar toen we onze papieren overhandigden... kregen we kleine onaangename verrassing. Toen we op het internet hadden zitten uitzoeken op welke dagen er nog tickets beschikbaar waren, moeten we per ongeluk naar een volgende maand doorgeklikt hebben, want hier stonden we nu, met reservaties voor een maand later...

Gelukkig waren de dame aan het loket en haar overste zo vriendelijk ons de tickets te geven van een ander koppel dat niet op tijd was komen opdagen. Alleen moesten we wel op de laatste groep wachten om de hoofdattractie, het Nazaridenpaleis, te kunnen gaan bekijken.

Ons bezoek aan het Alhambra begon dus onder een eerder opwindend gesternte... En er volgt meer.

De eerste plaats die we gingen bekijken was de Generalife, het 'lusthof' van het Alhambra. Mooie tuinen, fonteinen, uitzichten. De paleizen zijn niet zo luxueus, maar er zijn vele mooie hoekjes.

We wandelden door alle tuinen en patio's en waren net van plan over te steken naar het hoofdgedeelte... toen het begon te regenen. De regen stroomde en stroomde, en er was nergens een schuilplaats. Zelfs de wandelpaden liepen vol water.

Doorweekte toeristen liepen rond op zoek naar een droog plekje. Tenslotte was  de souvenirwinkel de enige plaats uit de regen die we vonden. We hadden geen regenjas of extra kleren, en we waren nat en koud. Er stond een klein verwarmingstoestel in de winkel en daar stonden we vlak naast terwijl we een sweatshirt uitkozen met het onvermijdelijke (en mooie) Alhambra-logo erop.

Na enige tijd verminderde de regen en durfden we weer buiten te komen om ons bezoek verder te zetten. We mochten het Paleis pas binnen met de laatste groep (rond 16u30), dus moesten we buiten wachten en ons warm zien te houden.

Na ons moment van verplicht consumisme gingen we naar het Paleis van Karel V, dat ook vol was met mensen die schuilden voor de regen. Na eens rondgekeken te hebben, staken we over naar het Alcazaba en zagen we al wat daar te zien was, inclusief een mooi panorama van de stad Granada. We hadden nog tijd over en begonnen ons hongerig, moe en koud te voelen...

Dus stapten we het kleine museum binnen, aan de zijkant van het Paleis van Karel V. We aten wat, maakten wat foto's, keken naar de maquettes en andere dingen die er tentoongesteld zijn, en wachtten onze tijd af om het Nazaridenpaleis te bezoeken.

Ook al was onze tijd nog niet gekomen, toch probeerden we binnen te gaan, en dat lukte. Dit gaf ons meer tijd om de pracht van deze onvergetelijke plek te bewonderen.

Elke muur, plafond en pilaar is een kunstwerk. Daken en vloeren geven je de indruk dat je een heel nieuw universum binnentreedt. Er zijn rijke kleuren en vormen, en een constant contrast tussen licht en dinker, tussen diep en vlak, tussen ronde vormen en lange. Dat alles vloeit samen tot een lieflijk en wonderlijk meesterwerk. Alles toont een diepe zin voor schoonheid en delicaatheid.

Om afgoderij te vermijden laat de Islam niet toe personen en vormen uit de natuur te verbeelden, daarom zijn alle elementen die in de composities gebruikt worden geometrisch of kalligrafisch. De uitzondering vormt de fontein met de twaalf leeuwen, en ook in het nieuwere werk zijn plantmotieven verwerkt. Dit wijst op de invloed van de christelijke cultuur of op een vrijere interpretatie van de islam.

Er zijn zoveel mooie details dat je nooit moe wordt er naar te kijken. Op de wereld zijn er zeker weinig plaatsen die zoveel schoonheid gecreëerd door mensenhanden bevatten. Toen onze tijd om was en het bezoek afgelopen, voelden we dat ons universum verrijkt was en we verlieten dit Paleis met schatten die ons bij zullen blijven.
